GFOA Recognizes Port of Brownsville for Excellence in Financial Reporting

BROWNSVILLE, Texas—For the fifth consecutive year, the Brownsville Navigation District received the highest form of recognition for governmental accounting and financial reporting for its 2015 comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR).

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) presented the award to Stephen B. Fitzgibbons, Port of Brownsville finance director.

“The Brownsville Navigation District commissioners and staff are dedicated to full financial transparency,” said BND Chairman John Wood. “On behalf of the board of commissioners, I commend the BND financial team on their commitment to successfully increasing the quality of our annual financial reporting.”

“I am fortunate to work alongside a team of professionals committed to the highest financial standards in accuracy, clarity and transparency,” Fitzgibbons said.

Long Chilton LLP, a registered public accounting firm, audited all financial statements related to the CAFR.

The GFOA established the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program (CAFR Program) in 1945 to encourage and assist state and local governments to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles to prepare comprehensive annual financial reports that evidence the spirit of transparency and full disclosure and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal.
