Port Enhances Maritime Security with New Police Boat

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – April 6, 2026 – The Port of Brownsville Police & Security Department has expanded its maritime enforcement and emergency response capabilities with the addition of a SAFE 23 Center Console Police Boat.

The vessel strengthens on-water operations by enhancing visibility and providing increased deck space, allowing officers to maneuver efficiently, stage equipment and conduct routine patrols throughout the port’s navigable waterways in support of daily security operations.

Designed for strength, speed and durability, the SAFE 23 Police Boat is powered by dual Mercury outboard engines and can accommodate up to 13 passengers. The highly maneuverable vessel supports a wide range of mission-critical functions, including law enforcement patrols, emergency response, search and rescue operations, dive missions and maritime research support. Equipped with advanced navigation technology, side-scan sonar, thermal and low-light camera systems, reinforced push knees and personnel recovery cutouts, the vessel enhances operational safety and situational awareness in all operating conditions. Officers assigned to the vessel will complete specialized maritime training and certification to ensure safe, effective and compliant operations.

The Port of Brownsville Police & Security Department safeguards port tenants, employees and maritime partners by providing a secure environment that supports port operations.

First established in 2004, the department is currently staffed by 29 employees, including 13 police officers, 15 security guards and one administrative assistant. The addition of the SAFE 23 Police Boat further strengthens the department’s ability to protect maritime operations and maintain security across the port community.
